Keep Your Home Cool and Your Bills Low

We are all looking for smart ways to save money this summer. Most of us would much rather put our hard-earned cash toward enjoying trips, festivals, and the other fun things the season has to offer. Last week, we discussed ways to reduce the amount of water you use, which can help lower your utility bill. However, there are several other ways to keep costs down so you can put that money toward the things you enjoy.

Replace Your AC Filter

It’s no surprise that during the summer, your air conditioner is one of the most valued appliances in your home. One way you might be spending more money than necessary is by having a dirty AC filter. When the filter is clogged, your air conditioner works harder and won’t cool your home as efficiently.

Additionally, a clean filter helps prevent dust and debris from building up in your system, which can lead to expensive repairs down the road.

Consider Your Blinds

What covers your windows can make a difference not only to your utility bill but also to how cool your home stays. One of the easiest ways to use your window coverings effectively is to keep them closed during the hottest parts of the day. Closing them in the morning helps prevent the sun from heating your home throughout the day.

Since proper use of window coverings can reduce heat gain by up to 77%, it's worth considering investing in ones that improve your home's energy efficiency. Medium-coloured draperies with white plastic backings are recommended for optimal performance.

Install a Smart Thermostat

A smart thermostat allows you to manage your home's heating and cooling settings directly from your smart device, whether it's a phone, tablet, or computer. With Wi-Fi capability, you can access temperature controls and other features through an app, allowing you to adjust your home's climate from virtually anywhere.

Seal Cracks and Gaps

Any openings in your home can allow cool air to escape and warm air to enter, making your air conditioner work harder. Check around your windows and door frames, and if you notice a change in temperature or feel a draft, it's time to seal those areas.

Additionally, don't forget about electrical outlets, your fireplace, chimney, and dryer vent, which are all potential entry points for air leaks.

Check Your Plug-Ins

Anything plugged into an outlet can use energy, even when it's not actively in use. This is often called phantom power, and it can account for up to 10% of your electricity bill

Take some time to look around your home and consider what is plugged in that doesn't need to be. If it's something you only use occasionally, unplug it when it's not in use. Another simple solution is to use a power bar, which can easily be switched on and off as needed.
