Summer Plumbing Tips

With summer in full swing, you're probably focused on enjoying the season rather than thinking about your plumbing. However, over these next months, it plays an essential role in your home. So, today, we’ve rounded up some helpful ways to beat the heat, conserve water, and save some of your cold hard cash this summer.

Shorter Showers

While you are likely spending more time outdoors, meaning showers might be more frequent, it’s a good idea to take shorter, cooler showers. This will help ensure you conserve water, while also ensuring everyone in your home can enjoy a pleasant temperature in the shower.

You might also want to consider installing low-flow showerheads. These devices are designed to use significantly less water than traditional models without compromising performance. By installing low-flow showerheads, households can save thousands of gallons of water each year, leading to lower water bills and a reduced environmental impact.

Check for Leaks

It’s important to check for leaky faucets or pipes. When you have a leak, this can lead to wasted water as well as energy.

Regularly check your bathrooms and kitchen to help ensure a small issue doesn’t turn into a large, and costly problem. A leaking toilet or faucet can cost you hundreds of dollars a month in wasted water. Additionally, in one month, a leak of just one drop per second will send about 10,000 litres of water down the drain.

Use Large Appliances Wisely

When it’s hot outside, it’s a good idea to run appliances like your dishwasher, washer and dryer during the evening, when it’s cooler. If possible, choose cold water settings to help reduce indoor heat and energy usage.

Avoid Summer Clogs

You will likely spend more time hosting friends and family during the summer months. This often means that you are cooking more and using the bathroom more frequently. This can add more strain to your plumbing.

Keep in mind what not to flush down the toilet, or pour down the drain to ensure your plumbing system runs smoothly and efficiently.

Turn off Water when Travelling

If you plan to leave for several days or weeks, turning off the main water supply to your home is a good idea. Burst pipes and leaks, especially while you are away, can cause significant damage. By shutting off the ability for water to enter your house, you are preventing any of that potential damage.

It’s also wise to disconnect hoses, drain outside faucets, and turn off your sprinkler system. You might even want to consider installing a leak detection system that can provide peace of mind while you’re away. These are designed to monitor for leaks and can send alerts to you or an emergency contact if a leak is detected.
