Dryer Maintenance Tips
Maintaining your dryer is just as important as your washing machine when it comes to safety, efficiency, and lifespan. A well-maintained dryer reduces the risk of fire, dries clothes faster, and uses less energy. So, today, we want to offer some helpful ways to keep your dryer running as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
Clean the lint filter
Always remember to clean your lint filter after every use! This step is key as it reduces fire risk and improves airflow. It’s also important to clean the screen of your washing machine with soap and water monthly to remove residue from dyer sheets or fabric softener. This will not only help your dryer work and look better, but it keeps your home and family safe.
Clean the dryer vent and duct
It is recommended to clean the dryer vent and duct at least once a year. However, if you use your dryer daily, for example, you should likely do it more often.
Disconnect the vent hose and vacuum out the lint buildup inside the hose and vent opening. Since clogged vents also pose a major fire hazard, you don’t want to skip this step! Additionally, clogged vents lead to poor drying performance meaning that your appliance won’t work as efficiently.
If the duct is long, or hard to access, you might want to consider calling in a professional to help.
Wipe down the drum
On occasion, clean the interior of your dryer with a soft cloth and mild soap. This will help remove residue or dryer sheet buildup that may be inside the drum. If you happen to have a sticky mess, such as melted crayons (thanks kids!), clean carefully with rubbing alcohol.
Check and clean moisture sensors
The motion sensors are usually located near the lint trap. Wipe these with a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol once a month. Clogged sensors can lead to insufficient or excessive drying of your laundry.
Avoid overloading
We know it’s tempting to shove everything in the dryer at once! However, overloading can cause the motor to overwork and reduce airflow. Be sure to always follow the machine’s capacity recommendations.
Keep it level
You can prevent excess noise and vibration, as well as wear and tear on your dryer, by ensuring your dryer is level and stable.
Use correct settings
Avoid overusing high heat, as it can damage fabrics and strain the machine. When available use moisture sensing or eco settings. This will ensure your dryer is working properly and according to what needs to be dried.
Clean around the dryer
Lint, dust, and debris can accumulate under and behind your dryer, which can also be a fire hazard. Therefore, move your dryer regularly so that you can give the surrounding area a thorough clean (always remember to unplug your dryer before moving!).
Signs Your Dryer Needs Maintenance or Repair
Clothes take longer than usual to dry.
Burning smells or excessive heat.
Dryer is noisy or vibrating more than usual.
Lint around the door seal or outside the vent.
Your washing machine and dryer make an excellent team, so ensure you are taking proper care of them both. In doing so your clothes will look great and smell fresh!
