Spring Furnace Maintenance

Spring is, if nothing else, technically here. That doesn’t always mean much for the weather in the Prairies, but it is a great time to do some cleaning. After being couped up all winter, it can be nice to do a deep clean and add some spring freshness. And even though your furnace is about to get a well-deserved break, it’s also a great time to do a little maintenance. Here’s what you should do for spring furnace maintenance.

Check your furnace filter

Chances are, after working hard all winter, you furnace filter could use some attention. When you use a dirty filter, your furnace must work harder, which means it is less efficient and costs you money. Ensuring your furnace is working well is important into the warmer months – any cooling system works alongside your furnace to circulate air. Whether your furnace filter just needs a cleaning or needs to be replaced depends on the type of filter you have, but a general rule of thumb is every 90 days (less if you have allergies or dust sensitivities), and after winter.

Clean around the furnace

Sometimes, to find more storage space, the area around your heating and cooling unit(s) can become cluttered. For your system to work efficiently and safely, it is important to keep the area clean and clear of debris and stored items. Once you have cleared the space, vacuum and dust thoroughly.

Clean your vents

Spring is an ideal time to hire someone to do a thorough duct work cleaning, to make sure you aren’t circulating dust and allergens when you heat or cool your home. But at the very least, you should take the opportunity to vacuum vents and registers and clear away any obstacles that block their flow.

Schedule a tune-up and inspection

You might think that the time to maintain your furnace is passed with the coldest nights, but you need an optimally functioning system for the warm months too – your furnace is also a key part of your home cooling system. Now is a great time to schedule an inspection and tune-up to make sure your unit is working as it should be. Parts can become worn or even just dirty over time – having it regularly inspected and maintained professionally can ensure it works when you need it to and works for as long as possible.

Spring cleaning isn’t just for your walls and baseboards – it’s a critical part of having a healthy furnace. Take the time to schedule or perform your routine maintenance now! Because whether it feels like it or not, it’s spring!
