Why is My Toilet Taking So Long to Fill?

Does it feel like it takes an inordinately long time for the water in your toilet to refill after you flush? If it seems like this is the case, there are a few possible reasons. Finding the right solution to this common problem will have you flushing normally again in no time!

Water supply valve issue

Between your toilet and the wall, you’ve probably noticed a knob – this is your water supply valve that controls the water going into your toilet. This should be the first thing you check – is your supply valve turned down or off? Ensure it is turned all the way open to maximize water flow.

Check your drain

If your valve is fully open and you are still noticing that the water is slow to enter the toilet bowl, it could be an issue with your drain. You can turn off the water supply, flush the toilet enough to clear the tank, and check if the drain at the bottom of the toilet tank needs to be cleared. If there is anything obvious that is blocking the drain, remove that, but you may also need to plunge the drain or use a little vinegar and baking soda to help with any clogs.

Clean the pump and valve

Sediment can build up over time, especially in some water conditions. If you see a mineral build up on the exterior of the fill valve (inside the toilet tank), use a little vinegar and a toothbrush to clean it off. Rinse the valve off.

Check for leaks

Look around the toilet for any puddles of water or dripping pipes. A broken or leaky pipe can cause a water pressure issue that will lead to a slower filling toilet. If you do find a leak, you may want to call us to help you fix the issue. You may need to check the manufacturer’s instructions or website if you need to disassemble parts.

Toilet still not running correctly?

If you still find your toilet isn’t refilling in a normal amount of time (or at all), it may be time to call in the professionals. There may be an issue with the pipes or the vent that requires a little extra troubleshooting.
